MVES Partners with UMW

In partnership with the University of Mary Washington (UMW), College of Education, Mountain View Elementary is the first elementary school in Prince William County to create a curriculum-focused MakerSpace. This innovative space is designed to encourage the use of current and emerging technology tools that support creativity, innovation, and personal engagement within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.

This MakerSpace, joined together with the Library, Computer Lab, and Broadcast Room, will provide an avenue for teachers and students to:
  • create STEM experiences, integrated with the Arts and 21st Century skills to create STEAM.
  • have open access to current and emerging technologies.
  • use experiential learning and authentic investigative practice, allowing learners to share, discuss, and compare new creations.
  • incorporate 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, project and resource management, creativity, and adaptability within important curricular content to enhance student performance.
Watch for opportunities for our school community to participate and support our MakerSpace!!

Kindergarten Registration
Calling all parents of the Mountain View Elementary Kindergarten class of 2014-15!
If you missed Kindergarten registration in March it is not too late! Please do not wait until the end of summer to register your child/children for school. It is essential that you register your child for Kindergarten early. We want to keep our outstanding teachers on staff at MVES and if we have to hire more, we want to conduct our interviews early so that we are able to hire the most qualified candidates!! Staffing of Kindergarten Teachers is determined solely by the number of Kindergarten students registered.
Please contact the Mountain View Elementary Office at your earliest convenience to schedule an appointment! 703-754-4161
TenMarks - Summer Math Program
TenMarks, an Amazon company, is partnering with states and school divisions to offer a summer program to families at no cost. The TenMarks Summer Math Program guides students through a personalized curriculum that meets their specific needs, beginning with a diagnostic assessment and using built-in instruction and real-time interventions. The program provides reports and drill-down insights, so families and schools/divisions can monitor usage, proficiency, and performance for each student, and at school and division levels. The program reviews concepts from the past school year and introduces concepts from the year ahead. The website,, provides additional information about the program.

Supply Kits
Make school supply shopping a special event to share with your child!  MVES will no longer be offering prepackaged supply kits. Please see the supplied link for your child's grade level supply list.

New PWCS E-News Subscription Portal
The new PWCS E-News, an extension of Blackboard Connect, will email news, closing announcements, and alerts to parents and the community. This replaces the system currently used for E-News. Signing on to the new subscription portal will enable users to choose what types of messages are received and from which schools. Staff, students, parents, and the community can sign up now at: PWCS E-News.

Daily Summer Activities
Our school is participating in a fundraiser that also promotes summer learning! Through Evan-Moor, parents have an opportunity to purchase Daily Summer Activities books. Research shows that short sessions of daily practice during the summer helps students to maintain and even increase what has been learned during the school year. By practicing basic skills during the summer, your child will be ready to make a smooth transition into the next grade. For every Daily Summer Activity book purchased using the MVES coupon code: DSA4027, MVES will receive $4. To order, click here.

Distinguished Achievement Award
Mountain View ES has been awarded The Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award! Our school is one of 136 schools in Virginia that met all State and Federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the Governor and the Board. Congratulations to students, teachers, parents, and our school community for your hard work and dedication!

Fall Baseball and Funding for MVES
Bull Run Little League, Chick-fil-A, and Sporting Smiles Dentistry will be donating $30 to each player’s PTO if you register for BRLL’s 2014 fall baseball season. This is limited to the first 300 registrations. If you are choosing to sign-up, be sure to mention Mountain View!

Study Island
Students have access to a great reading resource to learn throughout the year and prepare for the state standardized tests (SOL's).  The school purchased, web-based program called Study Island, is accessible to students from school or home. All students in grades 4 - 5 have a username and password which is given out by the classroom teacher. Click here for an overview of the program.

We are excited about the benefits this program can bring to our students, and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity by using Study Island. Please feel free to contact Study Island at 800-419-3191 or if you have any questions.
